Protecting unique wilderness – Why Quantum-Systems teams up with Wilderness International to protect unique natural areas in Peru

Gilching, 01.12.2021; Protecting unique wilderness areas for future generations is the goal of Wilderness International. Since 2008, Wilderness International managed to protect more than 5 million square meters of valuable and endangered rainforest by buying ecologically valuable wilderness areas in Canada and Peru. These are then entered in the land registry. Thus, the maximum durable legal protection is secured. The purchases are financed through donations. Wilderness sponsors can choose the areas they wish to protect and receive the exact geo-coordinates of the area protected.

To determine the exact location of this area and to track the use of the donation accurate georeferenced data and up-to-date, high-resolution photographs are a must but no easy task at all when you work in the dense rainforest. This is where Quantum-Systems supports this mission with equipment and technical expertise to capture aerial imagery with centimeter-level ground resolution in the areas that will be protected in the future, as well as to conduct additional aerial surveys with LIDAR and multispectral cameras.

In June 2021, Quantum-Systems joined Wilderness International on an expedition in Peru to capture aerial imagery with an extremely high ground resolution of the areas recently put under protection.

By assigning exact geo-localized data to every square meter, it is made clear which piece of wilderness is protected with each donation. Orthomosaics, high-resolution aerial photographs, are created for this purpose.

The cooperation with Quantum-Systems saves the team from Wilderness International up to 150 h of work per 50 ha land area.

High-resolution aerial images create transparency

If an institution, company, or individual decides to protect a piece of wilderness, it was previously possible to select the respective area on a map with a ground resolution of approx. 3 meters per pixel. Thanks to the high-resolution sensors onboard the Trinity F90+ drone, the level of detail now increases to approx. 2 cm ground resolution.

The data quality creates the necessary transparency between provider and supporter and shall be the new standard for future protection projects. By having such a high ground resolution available, completely new possibilities for long-term observation emerge. For the respective supporter, the plus of information about the protected area is of additional value.

More data, also for science

In addition to a high-resolution RGB camera, additional data was also recorded using LIDAR, as well as the MicaSense Altum multispectral & thermal powerhouse to capture even more details about the areas to be protected.

ALTUM Integrates a radiometric thermal camera with five high-resolution narrow bands, producing advanced thermal, multispectral, and high-resolution imagery in one flight for advanced analytics.

With the collected data it is an easy task to compare e.g. RGB data with a temperature map of the same area.

Qube 240 LiDAR Payload

Until recently, LiDAR payloads were hardly affordable for SMEs due to their high cost. This is exactly where Quantum-Systems and YellowScan come in and offer a geomatics grade LiDAR scanner integrated into the payload compartment of the Trinity F90+ drone including software package without having to compromise on data quality.

What is LiDAR?

LiDAR is an abbreviation for “Light Detection and Ranging”.
It is also called “laser scanning” or “3D scanning”. A LIDAR sensor emits pulses of laser light and measures the exact time it takes for these pulses to be reflected from the ground.

It also measures the intensity of that reflection LIDAR uses oscillating mirrors that emit laser pulses in many directions, creating an “arc” of light as the drone moves forward. By measuring the timing and intensity of the returning pulses, measurements of the terrain and points on the ground can be obtained.

Since it is not a passive-optical sensor, but an active sensor, the LIDAR flights in Peru could take place at night, while the RGB and multispectral images could be acquired during the day.

This is just the beginning

 

With the technical support of Quantum-Systems and the necessary tools in the form of fixed-wing UAVs and high-resolution sensors, Wilderness International can continuously map and survey its range of areas to be protected.

Thanks to time savings in the collection of data & provision of results, and at the same time higher depth of detail, transparency and efficiency increase in the presentation as well as in the communication with supporters.

The collected data is also made available to scientists for further analysis, for example to determine exact figures on the biomass or plant health status in each case.

Having highly detailed data is the only way to provide reliable information about the project region in the long term. This additional information is unique in this field so far.

Which drone does Quantum-Systems use in the projects with Wilderness International?

Quantum-Systems supported Wilderness International during this mission – and will for future ones – with equipment and technical expertise. The equipment is composed of the drone platform Trinity F90+ itself plus various cameras and sensors that are individually integrated into the drone and are easily exchangeable.

Every Trinity F90+ sold makes its contribution to protecting unique wilderness.
Quantum-Systems cooperation with Wilderness does not stop there but continues. As inhabitants of the earth, we consume nature every day and leave traces on the earth through our activities. According to the current state of science, this so-called ecological footprint can be measured most tangibly in terms of CO₂ equivalents. It can be compensated for by preserving intact natural areas. For example, the trees in the temperate rainforests of Canada and Peru are world champions in CO₂ sinking and sequestration.

We have not yet calculated the precise CO₂ footprint of our company, but nevertheless our company will assume responsibility for its consumption of nature from 2021. By protecting primary native forest in Peru together with the Wilderness International Foundation, we are offsetting part of our CO₂ footprint.

From December 2021 on, with the sale of each Trinity F90+ we protect and area of 64m² in the Peruvian rainforest and give back to nature.

An area of 64m² rain forest in Peru sequesters 3.84 t of CO2 in its biomass. This is equivalent to:

Surveying large areas with VTOL drones

SimActive and Quantum-Systems GmbH announce the successful integration of their products. Data captured with the Quantum-Systems Trinity F90+ mapping drone can be processed in SimActive’s Correlator3D software to generate DSMs, DTMs, point clouds, and orthomosaics. Data from high-precision sensors such as PPK receivers, survey-grade color, and multispectral cameras and LiDAR are all fully supported.

“The data collected by our drones can be quickly converted into highly accurate maps with SimActive software”, said Stefan Wurmser, Training Manager at Quantum-Systems. “Correlator3D can also easily handle large datasets comprising tens of thousands of images.”

Stefan joined Quantum-Systems in 2018 and is responsible for product demonstrations and training for customers. In addition to his job, Stefan is studying Applied Geoinformatics at the University of Salzburg by distance learning. His master thesis in the field of remote sensing with UAVs has been handed in and is awaiting grading.

The Qube 240 payload is a geomatics grade LiDAR scanner for the Trinity F90+ UAV and it endures up to 60 minutes of flight time with this combination.

Gilching, Germany, February 22nd, 2021 Light Ranging and Detection (LiDAR) sensors, partly traded as the key technology of the future for autonomous driving are also the first choice for highly productive survey tasks.

Until recently, LiDAR payloads were hardly affordable for SMEs due to their high cost. A small and powerful LiDAR sensor for the Trinity F90+ UAS

The Qube 240 LiDAR sensor inherits the YellowScan Ultra Surveyor LiDAR scanner. This was the first integration into our Tron UAS platform in 2017. Advances in miniaturization and performance improvements across the board now increased range and accuracy with a significantly smaller form factor. This is impressively reflected in the cost reduction of over 50% for the overall system.

​A geomatics grade LiDAR solution from a single source

The Qube 240 LiDAR provides essential information for surveying and mapping by generating an accurate 3D image of the process environment through 240.000 distance measurements per second.
Oustanding absolute accuracy is achieved with the help of the integrated Applanix APX15 INS. One can speak of a geodetic accuracy that was previously only achievable with LiDAR Systems of the upper price segment. The easy handling and user-friendly integration will convince customers. Fast and easy processing of the raw data is an additional benefit.

The solution comes with YellowScan CloudStation software which is enclosed in an adapted variant with a 1-year subscription license.

Ideal applications for the usage on board UAVs are in the following application scenarios:

  • Power Line Surveying and Mapping
  • Forestry & Agricultural Surveying and Mapping
  • Mobile Surveying and Mapping

“The Qube 240 convinces professionals with 240,000 shots per second, for which up to three reflections are measured. The result impresses on the one hand with an extremely high point density with 50-100 points per square meter, and on the other hand with very good penetration of the vegetation. This way, the creation of digital terrain models under forest is also possible without any problems.

All in all, I do not know of any comparable solution worldwide, considering the weight, the performance, and the accuracy. We are especially pleased to be able to offer our customers a novelty for our Trinity F90+ UAS.”

The development and technical integration began in the second half of 2020 based on the cooperation with YellowScan. Which was already in years of existence. We achieved our goal to develop a geomatics-grade LiDAR sensor for our Trinity F90+ drone!

“Impressive is the point density, even under vegetation and the low noise of the data. The sample data we collected so far also contains several GCPs some of which were covered with snow or are on loose ground and were measured two years ago. Nevertheless, one can see the extremely high accuracy of the system.

The balanced representation of the intensity values of the point cloud is also striking. These values are in any case better than the intensity values of comparable or even more expensive systems, like Velodyne PUK32 systems.”

Quantum-Systems donates 10000€ for the pediatric surgery departement of the Klinikum Ingolstadt

Quantum-System donates 10,000 Euro to the pediatric surgery department of Klinikum Ingolstadt – delivered in proper style by a Trinity F90+ in reindeer look.

CEO Florian Seibel is delighted that after a very successful year with a tripling of revenue he can now give something back for a good cause and handed over the check to Micha Bahr, Director Department of Pediatric Surgery.

The money will be used to equip the playroom in a Corona-compatible way and to re-equip the waiting areaso that the children’s stay in hospital is made more pleasant. Quantum-Systems, Ingolstadt Hospital and Pfaffenhofen Hospital are working together on the MEDinTime project, which involves the rapid delivery of emergency drugs by drone between the two hospitals.

The MEDinTime project is part of the Urban-Air-Mobility (#UAM) initiative, which was started in Ingolstadt and has since become internationally established. Also, thanks to Reinhard Brandl (CSU), Member of the Bundestag, who is active and constantly supporting the initiative. By the way, half of the money comes from fees that employees pay for the use of the company’s car park. Quantum-Systems has rounded up the amount.
