Can you tell us about the history and background of your company?

We have grown as a premier engineering solution provider company offering solutions for precise engineering surveying. Dutco Tennant LLC emphasizes on novelty and excellence in the surveying solutions & serve the construction industry in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, and other nations – One reason to add Quantum-Systems products to our portfolio!

Supported by weathered professional surveyors and ingenious workforce we provide solutions for many surveying areas like topographic surveys, tunnels, railways, measured building surveys, utility surveys, GPR scanning, laser scanning, and more.

Where do you see the strengths for the products of Quantum-Systems as a service provider and what can customers expect from you?

We constantly collaborate with global vendors to provide the most up-to-date products that benefit our clients from both quality and cost perspective. As part of our expansion, we are looking to fill a gaps in our current survyeing solutions. We were looking for a tool which can do mass data collection similar to our mobile mapping units, but in an economical way and felt drones could fill this gap quickly. Going thru Quantum systems and solutions, we believed it would be right solution.

Why Quantum-Systems? Why did you choose our products?

The market was demanding a VTOL based drone for survey and mapping and the Quantum Systems Trinity F90+ is the best in the VTOL market today! The efficiency of the Trinity F90+ is particularly convincing when customers have larger areas to cover and the use of multi copters would mean an increased expenditure of time.

Richard Butkus, III, joined Control Point Associates, Inc. in 2011 and has nine (9) years of experience in the land surveying industry. Richard began in the field as an Instrument Operator, where he excelled and quickly moved into the office as a Survey Technician. He has vast experience with terrestrial laser scanning and managing point cloud information, inside and outside of the office. Over the last year, Richard took on the role of UAV Operations Manager, supervising Control Point Associates, Inc.’s UAV pilots and overseeing firm-wide drone flight schedules, capturing photography, video, 3D Point Clouds, and aerial mapping. Richard manages the day-to-day operations and projects within the UAV Division. He is a certified UAV pilot.

Advanced training for DLR staff on Vector & Scorpion UAS as part of the LiveLage Project

At the beginning of July, within the framework of the already existing cooperation between Quantum-Systems and German Aerospace Center DLR, the LiveLage Project, selected DLR employees were given further training on our Vector & Scorpion UAV systems.

Driven by requirements from emergency services, the desire arose to develop an optical system for fast, precise optical reconnaissance of large-scale damage and disaster situations that can be integrated into unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and provide this data in real-time. The Security Research and Applications Department of the Institute of Optical Sensor Systems of the DLR is developing new technologies for the rapid reconnaissance of large-scale damage and disaster situations from the air. Current optical technologies are to be combined with the possibilities of new unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) such as Vector and Scorpion to enable operational support for authorities and organizations with security tasks (BOS).

Vector and Scorpion were selected as a carrier platform

The platforms will be used as carriers for a specially developed camera by the DLR, more specific the Institute for Optical Sensor Systems (OS). The Modular Aerial Camera System (MACS) will enable real-time tactical mapping. This development on the part of DLR runs hand in hand with the Helmholtz Innovation Lab OPTSAL, whose goal is the application-oriented testing of novel, optical technologies in combination with the UAS from Quantum-Systems.

The Duisburg fire brigade is the first fire brigade in Germany to test VTOL drones since 2018. It started with the Quantum-Systems Tron and now the Vector as a successor product.

The Duisburg fire brigade is taking on the role of being able to prove the system’s operational capability under real conditions. A Vector UAS will be used in combination with the MACS.

Particularly in the case of accident scenes that are difficult to reach from a traffic point of view, the overview of the situation gained in this way helps the emergency control team to coordinate the number of emergency forces, in addition to saving time through the image data transmitted via the real-time tactical mapping capabilities of the MACS.

Just recently, the special department for drone operations of the Duisburg fire brigade was our guest. Training with our Vector platform for scenarios like above was on the agenda.

Real-time mapping is a key element for all project partners

Another cooperation partner is Drones4Good, in which DLR is involved with the setup of MACS and Quantum-Systems Vector.

Drones4Good is about the development of suitable AI methods for the rapid evaluation of MACS aerial images. For example, it should be possible to automatically detect people and damage to roads and buildings in real-time. DLR-OS employees have been part of the non-profit aid organization ISAR-Germany since 2016, and the Vector UAS and MACS are to be used to support relief efforts during international rescue missions after devastating natural disasters. There have been three joint missions so far: October 2017 in Mexico, October 2018 in Indonesia, August 2020 in Beirut

Working together as project partners to create something new

Cooperation between different institutions from the private sector, government, and research is essential to lay the groundwork for new products. The rapid development steps and willingness to take risks of the participating partners to achieve the best results as cost-effectively as possible in a short time favors agile companies like Quantum-Systems.

For example, the use of drones in disaster control and rescue operations is still in its infancy for all parties involved. There is also a need for new technology in the special and often time-critical scenarios, such as the real-time tactical mapping function of MACS. This is also the reason why the state government is interested in providing financial support and promoting the project.

As Quantum-Systems, we are proud of this partnership and hope to gain additional knowledge to further enable our UAV platforms for rescue operations!

Surveying large areas with VTOL drones

SimActive and Quantum-Systems GmbH announce the successful integration of their products. Data captured with the Quantum-Systems Trinity F90+ mapping drone can be processed in SimActive’s Correlator3D software to generate DSMs, DTMs, point clouds, and orthomosaics. Data from high-precision sensors such as PPK receivers, survey-grade color, and multispectral cameras and LiDAR are all fully supported.

“The data collected by our drones can be quickly converted into highly accurate maps with SimActive software”, said Stefan Wurmser, Training Manager at Quantum-Systems. “Correlator3D can also easily handle large datasets comprising tens of thousands of images.”

Stefan joined Quantum-Systems in 2018 and is responsible for product demonstrations and training for customers. In addition to his job, Stefan is studying Applied Geoinformatics at the University of Salzburg by distance learning. His master thesis in the field of remote sensing with UAVs has been handed in and is awaiting grading.

Quantum-Systems added to unmanned systems solutions portfolio.

BSS Holland has recently added the Quantum-Systems Vector™ & Scorpion™ 2-in-1 ISR platform plus the Trinity™ F90+ large-scale mapping drone to its offering, expanding it with eVTOL fixed-wing UAVs.
The Vector & Scorpion 2-in-1 platform offers customer access to a deployment kit consisting of two configuration possibilities: An eVTOL fixed-wing long-endurance UAS and a Tri-Copter short-endurance UAS in one system, sharing the same fuselage. Changing between the two is a matter of seconds and possible without any tools, which opens further applications with just one UAS.

Vector™ delivers live video streams and high-quality aerial data with AI onboard.

Vector™ provides long-endurance, versatile and flexible characteristics that are exceeding the performance of conventional UAS platforms. It is suited for advanced ISR missions, streaming live data in real-time using a Mesh IP encrypted data link with a range of 15+ kilometers. Being equipped with advanced AI capabilities, the data assessment process of Vector is supported by automatic identification and tracking algorithms, providing on-the-ground tactical units with important safety and efficiency benefits. Vector features a single flight time of 120 minutes and is also suited for applications such as Search & Rescue (SAR), Live Area Mapping, and Convoy and VIP Protection. Vector integrates dual EO and IR gimbal sensors, enabling missions both, day and night.

Scorpion™ is suitable to operate in urban environments and in tethered configuration.

Scorpion is a Tri-Copter, using the same fuselage as Vector, leading to fast deployment on-site when changing the configuration and reducing training efforts for the user. Scorpion features a single flight time of 45 minutes and is ideal for smaller-scale use, for example in densely built urban areas. For stationary use, such as monitoring crowds or surveilling objects Scorpion can be configured with a Tethering System. Scorpion is using the same Mesh IP encrypted HD data link as Vector with an operating range of at least 15 kilometers to submit aerial video data in real-time.   

Trinity F90+ is optimized to efficiently acquire high-resolution aerial data.

BSS Holland’s drone offering will be rounded-off with the Trinity F90+ – Quantum-Systems’ flagship large-scale fixed-wing mapping drone. The Trinity F90+ is a professional large-scale mapping drone designed to capture high-resolution aerial data in a user-friendly and highly efficient manner. The Trinity F90+ integrates multiple, high-precision survey-grade sensors in an easily accessible and exchangeable payload compartment – including RGB, multi-spectral, thermal, and even LiDAR. The Trinity F90+ can cover an area of up to 700 hectares with one flight, achieving a flight time of 90 minutes and more with the same battery. The Trinity F90+ comes standard with a GNSS reference station, offering high-precision PPK and RTK enabling the geotagging relative precision of down to 2-5 cm in respect to the antenna placement point.
In operations, where knowing the terrain is a decisive factor, the Trinity F90+ safely and quickly provides high-precision geospatial data that can serve as a base for intelligence operation, tactical decision, and operations.

Quantum-Systems is agnostic when it comes to data post-processing. The captured images and all metadata are suitable for the common software suits for further post-processing. Data captured with the Trinity F90+ can be processed to generate 2D maps or 3D reconstructions of vertical environment, or using it for DSMs, DTMs, point clouds, and ortho mosaics.  Data from high-precision sensors such as PPK receivers, survey-grade color, multispectral cameras, and LiDAR are all fully supported by the common software platforms Quantum-Systems is partnering with. Thanks to Quantum-Systems’ licensed partnership with ESRI, users have online and offline access in the field to curated mapping data.
