BSS Holland is dedicated to supporting its customers in accelerating its OODA (observe-orient-decide-act) – loop. They focus on C5ISR (Command, Control, Computers, Communications, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance), sensor integration, and manned, unmanned and remote-controlled platforms. Quantum-Systems added to unmanned systems solutions portfolio.

BSS Holland has recently added the Quantum-Systems Vector™ & Scorpion™ 2-in-1 ISR platform plus the Trinity™ F90+ large-scale mapping drone to its offering, expanding it with eVTOL fixed-wing UAVs.
The Vector & Scorpion 2-in-1 platform offers customer access to a deployment kit consisting of two configuration possibilities: An eVTOL fixed-wing long-endurance UAS and a Tri-Copter short-endurance UAS in one system, sharing the same fuselage. Changing between the two is a matter of seconds and possible without any tools, which opens further applications with just one UAS.

Vector™ delivers live video streams and high-quality aerial data with AI onboard.

Vector™ provides long-endurance, versatile and flexible characteristics that are exceeding the performance of conventional UAS platforms. It is suited for advanced ISR missions, streaming live data in real-time using a Mesh IP encrypted data link with a range of 15+ kilometers. Being equipped with advanced AI capabilities, the data assessment process of Vector is supported by automatic identification and tracking algorithms, providing on-the-ground tactical units with important safety and efficiency benefits. Vector features a single flight time of 120 minutes and is also suited for applications such as Search & Rescue (SAR), Live Area Mapping, and Convoy and VIP Protection. Vector integrates dual EO and IR gimbal sensors, enabling missions both, day and night.

Scorpion™ is suitable to operate in urban environments and in tethered configuration.

Scorpion is a Tri-Copter, using the same fuselage as Vector, leading to fast deployment on-site when changing the configuration and reducing training efforts for the user. Scorpion features a single flight time of 45 minutes and is ideal for smaller-scale use, for example in densely built urban areas. For stationary use, such as monitoring crowds or surveilling objects Scorpion can be configured with a Tethering System. Scorpion is using the same Mesh IP encrypted HD data link as Vector with an operating range of at least 15 kilometers to submit aerial video data in real-time.   

Trinity F90+ is optimized to efficiently acquire high-resolution aerial data.

BSS Holland’s drone offering will be rounded-off with the Trinity F90+ – Quantum-Systems’ flagship large-scale fixed-wing mapping drone. The Trinity F90+ is a professional large-scale mapping drone designed to capture high-resolution aerial data in a user-friendly and highly efficient manner. The Trinity F90+ integrates multiple, high-precision survey-grade sensors in an easily accessible and exchangeable payload compartment – including RGB, multi-spectral, thermal, and even LiDAR. The Trinity F90+ can cover an area of up to 700 hectares with one flight, achieving a flight time of 90 minutes and more with the same battery. The Trinity F90+ comes standard with a GNSS reference station, offering high-precision PPK and RTK enabling the geotagging relative precision of down to 2-5 cm in respect to the antenna placement point.
In operations, where knowing the terrain is a decisive factor, the Trinity F90+ safely and quickly provides high-precision geospatial data that can serve as a base for intelligence operation, tactical decision, and operations.

Quantum-Systems is agnostic when it comes to data post-processing. The captured images and all metadata are suitable for the common software suits for further post-processing. Data captured with the Trinity F90+ can be processed to generate 2D maps or 3D reconstructions of vertical environment, or using it for DSMs, DTMs, point clouds, and ortho mosaics.  Data from high-precision sensors such as PPK receivers, survey-grade color, multispectral cameras, and LiDAR are all fully supported by the common software platforms Quantum-Systems is partnering with. Thanks to Quantum-Systems’ licensed partnership with ESRI, users have online and offline access in the field to curated mapping data.

Long-range drones to deliver emergency medication to hospitals – Project MEDinTime

The “MEDinTime” project supported by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure is testing the viability of the supply using unmanned aircraft systems in the Ingolstadt region. 

The “MEDinTime” project is being funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure with a total of 1.07m € starting October 28th, 2020, as part of the call for proposals “Unmanned aviation applications and individual air mobility solutions”. 

The project consortium consists of experts from Ingolstadt Hospital, Ingolstadt University of Applied Sciences, the district of Pfaffenhofen a. d. Ilm and the Bavarian Red Cross regional office under the project management of the network coordinator Quantum-Systems GmbH.

Drones could bridge mobility bottlenecks 

The joint project “MEDinTime” concerns itself with an innovative mobility solution for a growing problem with the supply of medication to hospitals. 

Clinics must stock a large selection of drugs around the clock for patient care. In addition, the rapid provision of special emergency medications must be ensured in the shortest possible time. This is usually guaranteed by appropriately equipped hospital pharmacies. Due to the distance to the nearest pharmacy and the associated transport time, even hospitals of the primary care level (I. level of care) have to keep a large stock of medication in order to be able to guarantee the supply at any time. After their expiration date, the products must be discarded. This circumstance is a considerable cost factor, not only for the hospital operator, but for the entire health care system.  

In the context of the “MEDinTime” project, a demonstrator for the reliable and safe supply of regional hospitals with drugs by means of automatically operated drones is therefore to be developed by December 2022 and investigated during a longer test phase. For this purpose, a test track will be set up between the hospitals of Ingolstadt and Pfaffenhofen. In addition, the system should provide real-time data on the availability of drugs to be transported. 

Drones as a logistical link in the supply of medication 

Vertically launching (VTOL) long-range drones from Quantum-Systems GmbH will serve as a basis. Unlike simple copter drones, these aircrafts can cover long distances (up to 100 km) quicklysafely and at low noise levels. Within the scope of the project, the drones will be equipped with a removable, intelligent transport box in accordance with the legal requirements for the transport of medication. 

Furthermore, the project will lay the foundations for further areas of application, such as the transport of medicines to disaster areas. The fast transport of samples by air from a test center to the laboratories is also conceivable in the medium term.

SANBS showcases a life-saving drone on the Quantum-Systems Tron UAV platform

Johannesburg, Munich, 29 May 2019 – The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) and Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) came together at the North Eastern Radio Flyers in Sandton to showcase  how they intend to save more lives using drone technology. An important part of the project is of course the drone itself. With the Tron, Quantum Systems is supplying the carrier system for the blood reserves.

Quantum-Systems Tron UAV as a key element

The TRON Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is a highly specialized aircraft that will be used to transport blood from blood banks to hospitals in remote areas. The TRON, like a helicopter, is capable of vertically taking off and landing. Once in flight it switches into a highly efficient aircraft. In an emergency blood can be delivered to hospitals much faster and more efficiently than ever before.

According to the SANBS, the TRON aerial vehicle will be a South African first, complementing the existing logistics infrastructure. It will continue to cement the not-for-profit organisation’s place as a thought leader and a cornerstone of the healthcare system in SA through the gift of life.

“We believe that this is an innovative step in the history of blood transfusion. SANBS is determined to improve rapid access to life-saving blood products in rural areas through the use of drone technology. Our concept is globally unique in that we will provide two-way logistics; patients can receive emergency “O negative” blood from one of our blood banks via drone. The same drone can then take that patient’s blood sample to the blood bank for comprehensive cross-matching and then safely and rapidly deliver compatible blood back to the patient” says Dr. Jonathan Louw, CEO of the SANBS.

The WCBS say this initiative is commendable and will indeed be instrumental in saving lives. “We celebrate a milestone. Our main aim as a blood service in the Western Cape is to save people’s lives by providing sufficient, safe blood. Drones will assist us to provide blood timeously to where it is needed,” says Dr Greg Bellairs, WCBS CEO/Medical Director.

The TRON is a professional and high-performing UAV. The system has a maximum take-off weight of 13,5 kg and can fly at speeds of up to 160km/h.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is an independent non-profit organization, and one of the leaders in the discipline of blood transfusion. The challenge the company is facing is how to build a greater level of brand affinity and turn itself into an organisation which generates advocacy of its cause across all South Africans.

SANBS operates in eight out of nine provinces in South Africa (with the exception of The Western Cape which is serviced by the Western Province Blood Transfusion Service). It also provides crucial support to countries in the SADC region.

SANBS supplies over one million blood products annually and is rated among the top blood services in the world.  This pedigree comes as a result of world-class testing and collection protocols which ensure that the blood which is transfused is always of top quality.

Blood is only collected from voluntary non-remunerated blood donors who lead safe lifestyles and meet the minimum criteria for donating blood however this criterion limits the potential donor pool.
Tests are done by using Individual Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (ID NAT) which detects the presence of HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and Syphilis.

The blood is processed into its constituent components; red blood cells, plasma and platelets therefore in principle a single blood donation can save up to three lives.
