Gilching, Germany, and Hilversum, The Netherlands, April 7th, 2021 Quantum-Systems GmbH has announced a new distribution partnership with BSS Holland BV, based in Hilversum, The Netherlands.

BSS Holland is dedicated to supporting its customers in accelerating its OODA (observe-orient-decide-act) – loop. They focus on C5ISR (Command, Control, Computers, Communications, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance), sensor integration, and manned, unmanned and remote-controlled platforms. The collaboration with Quantum-Systems is focused on building future readiness for the Tactical Edge, helping professionals in the defense and homeland security organizations by providing state-of-the-art Unmanned Aircraft Systems (drones) for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) applications, including real-time observation and analysis as well as tactical mapping.

Quantum-Systems added to unmanned systems solutions portfolio.

BSS Holland has recently added the Quantum-Systems Vector™ & Scorpion™ 2-in-1 ISR platform plus the Trinity™ F90+ large-scale mapping drone to its offering, expanding it with eVTOL fixed-wing UAVs.
The Vector & Scorpion 2-in-1 platform offers customer access to a deployment kit consisting of two configuration possibilities: An eVTOL fixed-wing long-endurance UAS and a Tri-Copter short-endurance UAS in one system, sharing the same fuselage. Changing between the two is a matter of seconds and possible without any tools, which opens further applications with just one UAS.

Vector™ delivers live video streams and high-quality aerial data with AI onboard.

Vector™ provides long-endurance, versatile and flexible characteristics that are exceeding the performance of conventional UAS platforms. It is suited for advanced ISR missions, streaming live data in real-time using a Mesh IP encrypted data link with a range of 15+ kilometers. Being equipped with advanced AI capabilities, the data assessment process of Vector is supported by automatic identification and tracking algorithms, providing on-the-ground tactical units with important safety and efficiency benefits. Vector features a single flight time of 120 minutes and is also suited for applications such as Search & Rescue (SAR), Live Area Mapping, and Convoy and VIP Protection. Vector integrates dual EO and IR gimbal sensors, enabling missions both, day and night.

Scorpion™ is suitable to operate in urban environments and in tethered configuration.

Scorpion is a Tri-Copter, using the same fuselage as Vector, leading to fast deployment on-site when changing the configuration and reducing training efforts for the user. Scorpion features a single flight time of 45 minutes and is ideal for smaller-scale use, for example in densely built urban areas. For stationary use, such as monitoring crowds or surveilling objects Scorpion can be configured with a Tethering System. Scorpion is using the same Mesh IP encrypted HD data link as Vector with an operating range of at least 15 kilometers to submit aerial video data in real-time.   

Trinity F90+ is optimized to efficiently acquire high-resolution aerial data.

BSS Holland’s drone offering will be rounded-off with the Trinity F90+ – Quantum-Systems’ flagship large-scale fixed-wing mapping drone. The Trinity F90+ is a professional large-scale mapping drone designed to capture high-resolution aerial data in a user-friendly and highly efficient manner. The Trinity F90+ integrates multiple, high-precision survey-grade sensors in an easily accessible and exchangeable payload compartment – including RGB, multi-spectral, thermal, and even LiDAR. The Trinity F90+ can cover an area of up to 700 hectares with one flight, achieving a flight time of 90 minutes and more with the same battery. The Trinity F90+ comes standard with a GNSS reference station, offering high-precision PPK and RTK enabling the geotagging relative precision of down to 2-5 cm in respect to the antenna placement point.
In operations, where knowing the terrain is a decisive factor, the Trinity F90+ safely and quickly provides high-precision geospatial data that can serve as a base for intelligence operation, tactical decision, and operations.

Quantum-Systems is agnostic when it comes to data post-processing. The captured images and all metadata are suitable for the common software suits for further post-processing. Data captured with the Trinity F90+ can be processed to generate 2D maps or 3D reconstructions of vertical environment, or using it for DSMs, DTMs, point clouds, and ortho mosaics.  Data from high-precision sensors such as PPK receivers, survey-grade color, multispectral cameras, and LiDAR are all fully supported by the common software platforms Quantum-Systems is partnering with. Thanks to Quantum-Systems’ licensed partnership with ESRI, users have online and offline access in the field to curated mapping data.

The Vector and Scorpion platform was officially released for sales in 2020 with several governmental clients in Germany and the U.S. Trinity was introduced to the market in late 2017 and is used for mapping projects in the agricultural sector, in the mining business, or by construction companies all over the world, transforming decision-making processes for the better by aerial data intelligence.

Quantum-Systems supplies drone technology to inspect Deutsche Bahn’s infrastructure

In order to monitor BVLOS (Beyond visual line of sight) infrastructures, DB relies on drones from Quantum-Systems for the “Urban Air Mobility” project in Ingolstadt.

Ingolstadt strives to become one of the competence centers for drones and autonomous mobility in general. Thus the model project “Urban Air Mobility”, which is also supported by the EU Commission, was launched.

Deutsche Bahn is a partner in this project and has been using numerous drones in pilot projects since 2015 to test their suitability for inspection tasks. UAVs from Quantum-Systems were always present at these tests, such as the Tron 2016 in the picture above.

The Urban Air Mobility project now strengthens the will to continue research into the suitability of drone technology for monitoring infrastructures such as Deutsche Bahn’s rail network and to take advantage of the benefits for DB and (rail) customers.

This will make it possible to react much more quickly and cost-effectively to operational disruptions. The (cost) advantages of using drones are also obvious during routine inspections, for example of vegetation in the track area.

On January 17th The Minister of State for Digitisation Dorothee Bär, DB Board Member for Digitisation and Technology Prof. Dr. Sabina Jeschke and the Mayor of Ingolstadt Dr. Christian Lösel signed a declaration of intent. In model tests, the use of drones and flying taxis as well as the necessary framework conditions are to be investigated (second row right: Dr. Reinhard Brandl, CSU Member of Parliament for Ingolstadt constituency).

The drone in the foreground is the Trinity F9, which was newly introduced in 2018. Thanks to PPK for position determination, it is possible to make high-resolution image material available here at low cost for a wide range of evaluations.

The signing took place on the margins of a meeting of the “Innovation Council” of the Minister of State, which took place at the invitation of Sabina Jeschke at the DB headquarters in Berlin. The aim of the committee is to promote digitisation in Germany through close exchange between politicians, companies and start-ups.

Quantum-Systems is proud to provide its unmanned aerial expertise for this project.

For us the exchange with the involved parties is important to optimize processes and scenarios in the daily use of our UAV systems and to adjust them as well as possible to the requirements of the users and authorities.

Trinity as first on site to collect data

CopKa is a BMWI funded project exploring the possibility of accompanying rescue operations with live images. Providing faster and more comprehensive information to mission control centers and additional participants in the rescue chain is the main goal. The data connection is achieved via satellite.

In November 2018 the Trinity performed an 8km long BVLOS flight within the framework of a disaster control exercise north of Munich. It is particularly worth mentioning in this context that the flight took place in the no-fly zone of the Munich Airport beyond visual line of sight.

The flight path led across a high-voltage line, followed by a highway and railroads through the suburb of Munich. The target area was directly located at the approach corridor of the Munich airport. Airplanes have an altitude of 300m above ground in this area.

Extensive approvals were the prerequisite

Thanks to explicit approvals by the German federal aviation office the Trinity was permitted to perform the mission. Only this made it possible to fly during active flight operations at Munich airport. An ADS-B receiver connected to our mission planning software QBase is only one requirement necessary for operations such as these.

Based on this data, situation-dependent and highly up-to-date resource planning is possible.In addition, valuable time of the emergency forces can be saved.. This time saving can be decisive for the success of life-saving measures in the future.

Thanks to the collaboration with the “CopKa” project, the Trinity was able to successfully transmit the first visual data via live stream to the emergency line. Equipped with data and video link on board, the emergency forces were able to access a wide range of data.

The project was regarded as a success by all participants and promises a lot for the near future. With the further development of the UAV systems, the entry hurdle will be even lower and meaningful data will be available even faster.

Such lighthouse projects are important to increase the acceptance for the use of drones in the population. We as Quantum-Systems are pleased to be able to actively help here.

First approved Beyond-Visual-Line-of Sight (BVLOS) UAV flight in Germany

One and a half years of preparatory work have paid off:

On 14th of February 2018 Quantum-Systems GmbH in cooperation with bavAIRia e.V. carried out the first test flight beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) approved by the Luftamt Süd and without a restricted flight area on the property of the German Air Force Technical Center for Aircraft (WTD 61) in Manching!

We flew with the VTOL drone Tron, with a wingspan of 3.5m and a take-off weight of 13kg. The simple operation and execution by only one person surprised in comparison to much more complicated military drone systems that otherwise fly here.

The 20m/s fast drone (72km/h) flew through the 2km long test track fully automatically several times, proving its reliable function including all data connections and emergency functions.

According to the current status no civilian drone is allowed to fly except the visibility range of 500m. However, making this possible is regarded as the holy grail that will only open up many drone applications for the future. For example, inspection of pipeline routes, pipelines, railway routes or other traffic.

In order to approve the present BVLOS flight, a great deal of preparatory work had to be done by a wide variety of agencies. All safety-critical scenarios had to be analyzed in detail and automatic or manual measures derived from them. What happens in the event of a radio failure when the airspace is suddenly needed by a rescue helicopter, etc.?

The process chains and communication structures, e.g. between tower and pilot, were described in an operating agreement, so that in an emergency the airspace can be quickly cleared or even an emergency crash can be initiated.

As a practical side effect, the ground was scanned during the flight, as it is often done in the applications of Quantum Systems for large-scale agriculture or surveying. Here is an insight into the evaluation of the recorded image data:
