Jan-Hendrik Boelens joins the leadership team and will lead the company’s engineering and technology development

 

Munich (Germany), October 1st, 2022 – Unmanned aerial systems company Quantum-Systems GmbH today announced that Jan-Hendrik Boelens will join its leadership team as chief technology officer (CTO) to lead the company’s engineering and technology development. The company ramps up to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding global defense & security market in parallel to the well-established commercial mapping and GIS market. Jan-Hendrik joins Quantum-Systems on October 1, 2022, after having previously led the development of one of the world’s leading eVTOL aircraft at Volocopter GmbH.

 Jan-Hendrik’s extensive track record of leading software and hardware development for complex civil and defense products will enable Quantum-Systems to accelerate its ambition of becoming one of the leading companies in AI powered autonomous aerial data capture.

Prior to joining Quantum-Systems, Jan-Hendrik held several leadership positions at Volocopter and Airbus. At Volocopter, he served as CTO and managing director, leading the engineering, manufacturing, and certification of the company’s VoloCity electric VTOL aircraft. At Airbus Helicopters, he was a chief engineer for the company’s H135M military helicopter and headed the company’s electrification transformation as leader of its electrical systems engineering department. Jan-Hendrik currently also serves as a member of the advisory board at German AI-startup Spleenlab GmbH.

Live Situational Awareness, Successful “Live-Lage” Proof of Concept with Vector

Rapid and accurate collection of live data relevant for situational awareness is enabling more efficient operations and their planning by first responders.

 

Live-Lage (Live Situational Awareness) is a project which has been implemented by the DLR Institute for Optical Sensor Systems in Berlin together with the Duisburg Fire Department. The aim of the project is to provide first responders and rescue forces with a precise live picture before they arrive at the place of the incident. This involves the Quantum-Systems Vector UAV, automatically flying to the scene of an emergency and using innovative camera and processing technology by the DLR and Eurocommand to transmit high-resolution aerial images and maps in real time to the control center and the command vehicle. The aim of Live-Lage is to help give the emergency services a decisive operational time advantage. Time that can save lives.

For fire departments and rescue services, every minute counts to handle operations in a better and more structured way. Information about the situation on the ground is crucial for command and control. The decisive factor here is that the more up-to-date and precise the information, the more efficiently operations can be carried out and lives saved.

In the “Live Situation” research project, the Security Research and Applications department of the Institute of Optical Sensor Systems is developing new technologies for rapid aerial reconnaissance of large-scale damage and disaster situations. Optical technologies are to be combined with the possibilities of unmanned aerial sstems (UAS) to enable operational support for authorities and organizations with security tasks. To this end, a special version of the Modular Aerial Camera System (MACS) is being developed for the Quantum-Systems vector UAS in close cooperation with the Duisburg Fire Department, which can generate current situation images in real time and transmit them to the operations command.

The Live-Lage Project in a nutshell

The Security Research and Applications Department of the Institute of Optical Sensor Systems of the DLR is developing new technologies for the rapid reconnaissance of large-scale damage and disaster situations from the air. Current optical technologies are to be combined with the possibilities of new unmanned aerial Systems (UAS) such as Vector and Scorpion to enable operational support for authorities and organizations with security tasks (BOS).

This video was made during an exercise under realistic operating conditions. It explains the contribution of each cooperating partner and how the latest technologies come together, supplying added value as an integrated solution: A drone-based method for real-time data analysis and high-resolution live mapping for efficient, time-saving coordination of rescue forces in the field.

We are very satisfied with the result of the exercise on the Live Situation project. We have achieved our common goal of providing rescue forces and civil protection with live mapping in very high resolution. In close cooperation with the DLR Institute for Optical Sensor Systems, we were able to add this tactical capability to our Vector system – and offer our customers a decisive added value for their missions in the future.

The next steps for Live-Lage

In the near future, selected system components from MACS will be included in the product portfolio of the company’s partners and will be available on the market.

The operation of the system should be as simple as possible in order to minimize the hurdles for the worldwide use of the system, on the one hand during the training of the system and on the other hand during the use of the system itself. Creating live georeferenced images that are automatically stitched and live mapping is a complicated task that should be implemented as simply as possible for the end user.

Worldwide partners for the use of the system are needed in order to gather experience values to develop the system to market maturity.

Vector long-endurance reconnaissance drones in operation in Ukraine

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has selected Vector drones from Quantum-Systems. The delivery in military support for Ukraine’s armed forces is being financed by German funds for security capacity building.

Munich, Germany – August 1st, 2022 – Munich-based drone manufacturer Quantum-Systems has received an order from Ukraine for the delivery of reconnaissance drones. Part of the ordered drones is already in use in Ukraine. Delivery of the larger part of the ordered quantity is still in the preparation and processing stage and will take place after the training of Ukrainian forces and drone pilots.

The details of modalities and logistics will be clarified in close consultation between the partners involved. Training on the use of the Vector reconnaissance drone usually takes no more than four days. For security reasons, no further details on the quantity and timing of the deliveries will be given until the handover has taken place.

It is important to me to be able to supply the Ukrainian army with a system that supports in the defense of their country. Due to the state of emergency on site and thanks to the support of the German Ministry of Defense, we were able to serve and realize the order from Ukraine very quickly. This applies not only to the financing, but also to the coordination of the training services and the export license. The solidarity with Ukraine and the defense of our common democratic values has led to a much faster procedure than would normally be the case.

 Further expansion of cooperation

A tour of the Liebherr-Elektronik GmbH plant in Lindau at the beginning of June 2022 heralded the start of a further expansion of the cooperation beyond manufacturing services. In future, the focus will be on development and qualification in the field of electronics in particular. With its in-house test centre in Lindau, Liebherr can also carry out the qualification and verification of electronic components on-site.

The drones from Quantum-Systems can be equipped with different sensors and cameras. The possibility to take off and land vertically provides additional flexibility in use. The autopilot manufactured by Liebherr also enables fully autonomous drone operations. Fields of application are, for example, the health analysis of plants from the air, the progress monitoring in open-cast mines or the provision of live situational awareness from disaster areas.
