Presented at the Intergeo in Stuttgart this week, our newest UAV, the Trinity F90+, already completed its first mission at the Oktoberfest in Munich last Friday.

Every year, the Oktoberfest “die Wiesn” attracts several million visitors from all over the world to the state capital Munich. As at any large event, such a high number of visitors presents the emergency services with major logistical challenges.

In order to be able to guarantee the safety of the visitors, plans of action and scenarios must be planned in advance in order to be able to help effectively and efficiently where necessary during the 16 festive days.

The Oktoberfest in 470 images

To support exactly this mission planning the DLR (German Aerospace Center) teamed up with Quantum-Systems and created a map of the festival grounds. A Trinity F90+ UAV equipped with a Sony RX1 II camera scanned the area of 40ha in a 15-minute flight.

With a special permit it flew at 200m above ground and achieved a ground sample distance of 2.5 cm/px using its PPK capability. (PPK – Post Processing Kinematics: Simply put, a technique to correct GPS signals to achieve an accuracy in the centimeter range)

The gathered 470 images with a total size of 19GB were then post processed by the DLR and combined into a single map.
This map will be used by the Munich fire department to verify evacuation and emergency approach routes and to improve the situation overview in the control center.

Drones – not just a buzzword

Drones are one of the markets of the future and still have to prove their benefits to society. Application scenarios like this can help to increase the acceptance of drones.

Especially in densely populated areas around the Theresienwiese in Munich, the use of drones is less costly and time-consuming than a manned aircraft.

The flight for this project took place before the Oktoberfest, but depending on the legal situation, it may also be possible in the future to fly during the festive season if the situation requires so. However, this will take a few more years until the appropriate framework conditions for such an operation have been created.

Special thanks to Thomas Oswald for providing video and photo material!
